Description
A striking example of early 19th century English blue and white transferware, this deeply cobalt plate showcases the beloved Chinoiserie aesthetic that defined the Regency and early Victorian eras. The central medallion features a classic Oriental garden scene complete with a multi-tiered pagoda, decorative urn, fencing, and lush florals — all rendered in the crisp, detailed transfer-print technique that made British pottery famous worldwide. The wide border is densely decorated with an exuberant floral and foliate pattern typical of Staffordshire or similar English potteries of the 1820s–1840s. The scalloped, rope-twist rim edge adds an elegant dimensional quality rarely seen on standard flatware of the period. The rich, saturated cobalt blue tone is characteristic of the flow blue and deep blue transferware highly sought by collectors today. This plate represents a tangible piece of Anglo-Chinese design history — a fusion of Western craftsmanship and Eastern inspiration that captivated consumers for generations. It would make a wonderful addition to a transferware collection, a period room display, or a curated shelf of blue-and-white ceramics.
Condition
FairVisible chips and crazing along the scalloped rim edge, particularly noticeable at top; some brown staining/discoloration at rim. Central image and transfer print remain intact and clear. Age-appropriate wear consistent with 19th century piece.
