Description
A lovely example of 19th-century English transferware, this dinner plate features the classic mulberry/purple colorway that was highly fashionable during the Victorian era. The central scene depicts an elegantly dressed couple strolling before a grand country estate, framed by lush trees and flowering gardens, with what appears to be a domed cathedral visible in the background. The scalloped border is richly decorated with a floral diaper pattern surrounding six cartouche vignettes, each containing charming romantic landscape scenes — including country estates, pastoral views, and decorative figures. This style is consistent with British pottery production from the 1830s–1860s, when romantic landscape transfer printing was at its artistic peak. This plate would make a beautiful display piece for a collector of Victorian ceramics, transferware enthusiasts, or anyone decorating in a cottage, English country, or antique farmhouse aesthetic. The warm purple-on-cream palette is particularly sought after among mulberry transferware collectors.
Condition
FairVisible crazing throughout glaze, some brown staining/discoloration on border areas (left side and upper right), typical of age. No chips or cracks visible, but the staining and crazing reduce collectible value.
