Description
This handsome antique side chair exemplifies the American Empire style that was popular throughout the mid-to-late 19th century. The scrolled crest rail and shaped vase splat back are hallmarks of this beloved American furniture period, reflecting the classical influences that swept through domestic furniture design following the Federal era. The chair features beautifully turned front legs and side posts with a distinctive cross-stretcher base, all characteristic of quality period craftsmanship. Most notably, the original hand-woven cane seat survives intact — a rare find in chairs of this age, as cane seating is notoriously difficult and expensive to restore. This piece would be a wonderful addition to a period-appropriate interior, a collector's grouping, or as a charming accent chair. The warm honey-toned patina of the wood has developed naturally over more than a century of use, giving it the authentic aged character that reproduction pieces simply cannot replicate.
Condition
GoodCane seat intact with no major breaks or sagging, which is excellent for age. Some wear and patina to the wood frame consistent with age. Minor surface scratches and scuffs. No visible broken joints or structural issues apparent.
