Description
A stunning example of American Empire period furniture, this grand mahogany sofa showcases the bold classical revival aesthetic that defined early 19th-century American design. The style draws heavily from Greco-Roman and Egyptian motifs popularized following Napoleon's campaigns, brought to American parlors through craftsmen trained in the traditions of Duncan Phyfe and his contemporaries. The sofa features dramatically scrolled arms terminating in exquisitely carved cornucopia or dolphin figures — among the most desirable decorative motifs of the Empire period. The front apron displays additional carved ornamentation, and the sofa rests on substantial carved paw feet with platform base, all rendered in richly grained dark mahogany that has developed a beautiful aged patina. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of American decorative arts history. Pieces of this quality and elaborateness are increasingly scarce and highly sought after by serious collectors, period room decorators, museums, and interior designers seeking authentic historical statement furniture. The bold sculptural presence commands attention in any setting. Seat is 20” h Arms are 30” h
Condition
GoodFrame appears structurally sound with rich dark mahogany carvings intact including cornucopia/dolphin arm supports and paw feet. Upholstery cushions are cream/off-white and appear relatively clean but show some softness/flattening. Some minor wear expected on carvings consistent with age.
