Description
This beautifully framed mola features a stylized bird rendered in the distinctive reverse appliqué technique of the Kuna (Guna) people of Panama's San Blas Islands. The design showcases the characteristic layered fabric work with bold geometric border elements and a richly detailed central bird figure with a blue crest, black and gold striped tail, and polychrome decorative marks surrounding it — all set against a deep crimson background. Molas are traditional garment panels historically worn by Kuna women as part of their blouses, and they represent one of the most recognized forms of indigenous textile art in the Americas. Each piece is handcrafted, making every mola entirely unique. This example displays excellent color saturation with orange, blue, green, lavender, and gold accent elements typical of high-quality traditional work. Presented in a warm wood frame under glass, this piece is ready to hang and makes a striking statement in any space that celebrates world folk art, Latin American culture, or indigenous textile traditions. A wonderful addition to any art collection or a meaningful gift for the well-traveled.
