Description
A wonderful pairing of American domestic history and patriotic folk art, this antique sad iron and matching cast iron trivet represent everyday life from the late 19th to early 20th century. Sad irons — named for the Old English word meaning 'solid' — were heated on wood or coal stoves and used to press clothing and linens before electricity came to the home. The trivet is the true showpiece of this set, featuring an ornate shield shape adorned with crossed cannons, a grape cluster centerpiece, and a raised United States shield at the base — a design deeply rooted in American military and patriotic iconography. This style of trivet was popular as both a functional tool and a decorative household statement piece. This set would make a compelling addition to any collection of American primitives, kitchen antiques, laundry room memorabilia, or patriotic Americana. Display together as a conversation piece or use as props in historical photography and period room settings.
Condition
FairHeavy patina and oxidation on iron body with green verdigris and rust. Wooden handle shows age and wear. Trivet has decorative US shield/crossed cannons motif with good casting detail but surface rust and patina throughout.
